I love being a mum and I love running the business I co-own and diving into meaty work with clients. Before having my little one I knew that I’d have to find a way to integrate it all, and to be honest that was a bit scary.
While I was pregnant plenty of people outright told me I wouldn’t be back at work as soon as I planned. But I started dipping my toes back in after two months and then building my office hours up from three months – and it was exactly the right decision for me, my family and the business.
My biggest piece of advice is making sure you and your partner are on the same page. I literally couldn’t have gone back to work so early and be managing such meaty work if it wasn’t for my husband. He looks after our son during the week too and his work flexibility has been crucial to mine.
For me it’s also about integration. I’ve got a life to do list of work and home, and I power through it. The key is being disciplined about what gets on the list. I’ve got to make sure I’m spending time on what shifts the dial, not just what keeps me busy.
The big thing I wish people knew was I probably have more thinking time now. I hate the subtext that because I have a little one, I can’t do the same meaty work.
