Working part-time has given me the freedom to contribute deeply as CEO while also dedicating time to other causes I care about, such as my board work and in advocacy (eg as an Ambassador for the Malaghan Institute). Rather than limiting me, reduced hours have sharpened my focus and forced clarity on what really matters - I may only get paid part time, but that helps me spend time on what really matters.
It has also strengthened my team. Knowing I’m not always in the room empowers them to take ownership, make decisions, and grow as leaders in their own right. In many ways, my part-time status has created more resilience and capacity in the organisation. And they are experts - more than me> I love seeing them continue to grow and take ownership.
What I’d love others to know is that senior part-time roles aren’t a compromise - they can be a catalyst. They allow leaders to bring a richer perspective from outside commitments, while proving that impact comes from focus, not simply hours at a desk (and it lets others take the lead!)
