Anna Fitzgibbon

When it comes to part-time work, I believe it’s all about what works for you and your family and don’t think there is a one size fits all / many approach, so I don't feel like I have all the answers. Working part-time allows me to spend the time I value at home with my two boys while still having a career that interests and challenges me. I have learnt (and are still learning) that what might work for my family for a period might not work for another period (e.g. having 1 or 2 days off compared with working 5 days school hours) - being adaptable and having flexibility is key!

Having a team that fully encourage and support your part-time arrangement is important, and clear communication on your whereabouts / availability really helps this. My team and clients respect the hours that I work but also know if something is urgent, I will happily flex my schedule to make sure I can help out. I have also had the opportunity to help others in my team ensure their part-time arrangement works for their family and us as wider team. Having a supportive partner or team at home with young kids is also just as important. Be conscious that at times you will be getting pulled in different directions with work and family commitments, so having support in both areas is key to making the juggle work!

I feel grateful that my career progression has not been limited by traditional work patterns and are keen to make sure others know that if they want to, they can work reduced hours and also have a great leadership role.
